What kind of heating method should we have on the brewhouse?
The brewhouse heating is one of the important questions we need to think about when we are setting up a brewery.
Here are mainly three kinds of heating methods that are suitable for the craft beer breweries-Electric, direct fire and steam.
What are differences on equipment for the three ways: The electric heating require electric heating elements.
The direct fire heating requires a burner and need to build a fire chamber under the tank, both of which cost additionally.
The steam heating require a steam boiler that cost additionally.
Reference opinion to think about the heating ways for brewhouse: Though here are options for different heating for brewhouse (steam, direct fire and electric), our opinion is to decide the heating elements via combining this two main factors:
1) The budget
The steam boiler cost higher which may bring budget pressure.
So if the budget is most important, then you could give priority to the electric heating or direct fire heating for the brewhouse.
Please also combine the charge differences between gas and electric that will also effect the cost in future.
2) The other important concern is brewing method
For the electric heating or direct fire heating, the mash/lauter tun can not be heated.
So the brewhosue with electric heating is suitable to mash via mixing hot water to reach the expected temperatures.
If we want to mash in the kettle (heat the mash liquid directly), it is not suitable to make high plato beer which use more grain,
since the mash will be easily scorch onto the electric heating elements or the kettle bottom if there is fire under the bottom..
For the steam heating, the mash/lauter tun, kettle/whirlpool tun are both jacketed.
So the brewhouse with electric heating brings more convenience to utilize the tanks (for example, we can heat the lauter tank with steam heating)
And since the steam is more gentle and heat the tank evenly, we can brew freely without much limitation.
If we brew normal plato beers and use the tanks in most simple way,
then the electric heating/direct fire heating is a very good option.
