While wort is filtered (lauter process), sometimes the filter speed is very slow that even stops, thus the lauter time is extended much, and the wort quality and normal brewing process is effected. The main reasons of this situation include: bad grain quality or non-good mashing result that caused poor sugar composition with a high viscosity, or the lauter operation error etc. So here are some urgent solutions:
1.Stop the lauter and start the lauter rake to loose the grain bed.
2.The bigger volume lauter tank is normally configured with anti-rinser rings. So we can spray into hot water (75-78℃) from the bottom to help with loosen. If the lauter speed is still not improved, then we can anti-rinse water and meanwhile start the rake for agitating 2-4 minutes. If necessary, increase the raking speed to damage the original grain bed, and then let the wort till for 5-10 minutes to form into a new grain bed, then restart the lauter. Besides. we should also pay attention to the lauter insulation. And the sparge water temperature can not be too low.
3.Slow down the pump/lauter speed to avoid ‘vacuum’ situation.
