Different capacity of brewhouse is in different diameter. For example, the body diameter of 5bbl mash/lauter tun is 1060mm; 10bbl mash/lauter tun is 1360mm. but how can we make sure the diameter is a scientific reasonable design?
For body diameter, it is calculated by the spent grains thickness. As we all know, a good grains thickness is important for lautering. If the grain bed is too thin, even wort goes through spent grain many times, it is still cloudy. If the grain bed is too thick, it takes too long time to finish the lautering process.
Usually, the ratio of water and malt is 1:3--1:4. For 5bbl brewhouse, it needs about 150KG malt.
The volume of 150KG malt is about 0.27M3. (According to rule, 1000kg malt =1.8M3)
The best thickness of spent grains is 0.3m-0.4m.
According to the formula, V=πr²*h.
0.27=πr²*0.4 or 0.27=πr²*0.3.
So we can find that diameter between 1210mm to 1060mm is good.
This is why we design brewhouse body diameter in specific diameter.
Hope you brew awesome beer!
